Jay, you've raised some really interesting and important ideas in this article - thank you for backing gently into the elephant. On one hand, I do think Medium can offer an opportunity for non-native English speakers to read extensively - but as you say, they need to be reading quality writing for it to give them value. Similarly, the opportunity to practice writing in English can only be assisted if editors of publications reject and provide editorial feedback for improvement. These things are not policed or enforced and it's questionable whether the ecosystem can rectify itself in time (eg if publications with poor writing just don't get reads). But I hadn't thought about the flow-on effect of views vs reads and engagement and its impact on Medium writers. This is a pretty massive unintended consequence that is going to take Mother Medium some heavy brainstorming to address... Thanks again for highlighting it. I'll follow this topic with interest.
