Does it have a meaning? Here’s a little bit about my name…

Who named you and why? Does your name have meaning?

I was named by my parents. Initially they thought to call me Tanya, which was quite popular at the time. But that name was nabbed by another baby, born into the extended family just before me.

Sonya” was chosen to avoid confusion.

Yet confusion found us anyway. It’s a funny family story that’s been told and retold many times.

You know how it is when a new baby is born — everyone in the family is sending cards and letters, or calling long-distance with good wishes. (Well, that’s how we did it in the Olden Days!).

One of the elderly relatives had called my parents to say congratulations and ask about the new baby’s name.

She might have been a bit hard-of-hearing, or perhaps the land lines were a bit crackly, with it likely being a trunk call. (You can look it up!)

I guess the conversation went a bit like this:

“Congratulations on your little bundle of joy! Have you decided on a name?”

“Yes, Sonya.”
